Painting Sassanid Spearmen

Sassanid Spearmen

Kevin Nicholls asked me for the ‘recipe’ I used for painting the MDS Sassanid infantry, so here goes.

The figures were primed white, using Halfords Acrylic Car primer.

After that, I tend to work from the inside out, so I started with the flesh -

Foundry 55B Butter Fudge.

The hair was painted black, and then carefully dry-brushed Foundry 42B Bay Brown.

The trousers and undershirts were painted various shades of grey - roughly 1/3 of the figures each receiving either Foundry 32C Slate Grey Light, Vallejo Model Color 101/886 Green Grey or 111/987 Medium Grey.

Most of the rest of the clothing was white, and so was left with just the primer coat (I’m a cheat you know!).

The blue bands on the hats were painted with Foundry 62B Night Sky.

The scabbards were painted with Foundry 42B Bay Brown.

The boots were painted with Foundry 53B Chestnut.

Wood (sword pommels, spear shafts, etc) was painted with Foundry 13B Spearshaft.

The belts were painted with Citadel Bestial Brown.

Steel (sword blades, spearheads) was painted Citadel Chainmail.

Shield backs were painted Foundry 7A Buff Leather Shade.

Shield fronts were painted Foundry 9B Boneyard, with the panel in the middle Vallejo Model Color 101/886 Green Grey.

Once that was dry, the models had Army Painter Quick Shade ‘Strong Tone’ applied by brush.

After that, fine sand and grit was glued to the bases, which were painted Vallejo Model Color122/912 Tan Yellow and dry-brushed 007/837 Pale Sand.

Testors’ Dull Cote was sprayed on the figures at this stage, and then the very last thing was to glue on small patches of Woodland Scenics ‘Burnt Grass’ turf.

If folks have an appetite for these, I suppose I could publish them in a separate little area...  Though really, I'd prefer people to use their own imaginations when deciding on paint colours, instead of copying mine - flattering though it is!
